Every year since 2003, the CVIR Editorial Board has awarded the authors of articles of particular merit with the renowned Editors’ Medal.
Editors' Medal 2016
Professor Johannes Lammer et al. have been awarded the Editors' Medal 2016 for their paper "Sustained Benefit at 2 Years For Covered Stents Versus Bare-Metal Stents in Long SFA Lesions: The VIASTAR Trial".
The awards for the "Outstanding Service to the Journal" 2016 were presented during the annual CVIR reception at CIRSE 2016 in Barcelona, Spain. We are happy to introduce a new award category for the “Best Media Performance” which is based on the Altmetrics Score that provides an indicator of the amount of attention that an article has received.
In 2016, following authors have been awarded:
Most Downloaded Article: Anthony James Lopez, “Female Pelvic Vein Embolization: Indications, Techniques, and Outcomes” which was downloaded 947 times. Dr. Paul Lohle accepted the award on his behalf.
Best Media Performance: Mark C. Burgmans et al., “Percutaneous Isolated Hepatic Perfusion for the Treatment of Unresectable Liver Malignancies” which received an Altmetric score of 62 from publication.
Award for Most Cited Article: Giovanni Mauri et al., Real-Time US-CT/MRI Image Fusion for Guidance of Thermal Ablation of Liver Tumors Undetectable with US: Results in 295 Cases which was cited 11 times.
Most Reviews carried out: Dr. Thomas Kinney for reviewing 10 manuscripts.
Editors' Medal 2015
The Editors' Medal 2015 has been awarded to Volkan Cakir et al. for their paper "Use of Percutaneous Aspiration Thrombectomy vs. Anticoagulation Therapy to Treat Acute Iliofemoral Venous Thrombosis: 1 Year Follow-up Results of a Randomised, Clinical Trial".
Awards for Outstanding Service 2015
In appreciation of their efforts for the journal, CVIR awarded the 2015 Awards for Outstanding Service to the following recipients:
Award for Most Cited Article: Sanjeeva P. Kalva et al. for their article "Safety and Effectiveness of Chemoembolization with Drug-Eluting Beads for Advanced-Stage Hepatocellular Carcinoma" which was cited 5 times in 2014.
The Award for Most Cited Article went to Madhava Pai et al. for their "Percutaneous Intraductal Radiofrequency Ablation for Clearance of Occluded Metal Stent in Malignant Biliary Obstruction: Feasibility and Early Results" which was also cited 5 times in 2014 and therefore received the same award. As Dr. Pai could not attend the ceremony, Prof. Malkhaz Mizandari accepted the award on his behalf.
Award for Most Often Downloaded Article: Luca Saba et al.'s "Imaging of the Carotid Artery Vulnerable Plaque" which was downloaded 649 times in 2014.
Four reviewers received the Award for Most Reviews Carried Out for reviewing 9 articles in 2014: Miguel de Gregorio, Gerard Goh, Ali Haydar and Raman Uberoi
Editors' Medal 2014
The Editors' Medal 2014 was awarded to two author groups:
Nicholas Chalmers et al. for their "Randomized trial of the SMART stent versus balloon angioplasty in long superficial femoral artery lesions: the SUPER study"
Ganapathy Ananthakrishnan et al. also received the Editor's Medal 2014 for their "Randomized comparison of uterine artery embolization (UAE) with surgical treatment in patients with symptomatic uterine fibroids (REST trial): subanalysis of 5-year MRI findings".
Awards for Outstanding Service 2014
In appreciation of their efforts for the journal, CVIR awarded the 2014 Awards for Outstanding Service to the following recipients:
Award for Most Cited Article: Xiaodong Wang et al. for their "Margin Size is an Independent Predictor of Local Tumor Progression After Ablation of Colon Cancer Liver Metastases" which was cited 9 times in 2013
Dr. Konstantinos Sofocleus accepted the award on behalf of the author group.
Award for Most Often Downloaded Article: Inge C.J. Koetser et al. for their "Checklist to Improve Patient Safety in Interventional Radiology" which was downloaded 1,144 times in 2013
Dr. Krijn van Lienden accepted the award on behalf of all authors of the most downloaded article in 2013.
Volker Ruppert received the Award for Most Reviews Carried Out for reviewing 9 articles in 2013.
Editors' Medal 2013
The Editors' Medal for 2013 was won by:
Isaac T. Manyonda et al. for their article “Uterine artery embolization versus myomectomy: impact on quality of life--results of the FUME (Fibroids of the Uterus: Myomectomy versus Embolization) Trial” (Cardiovasc and Interv Radiology (2012), 35(3):530-6)
Anna-Maria Belli accepted the Editor's Medal and prize money on behalf of all the authors.
The 2013 awards for for Outstanding Service to the Journal were presented during this year's CVIR reception held during CIRSE 2013 in Barcelona, Spain.

In 2012, CVIR introduced a new award to honour its most active non Editorial Board members from the previous year. The awards were presented during the 2012 CVIR Reception.

CVIR’s Editorial Board Members, Editors and Reviewers were invited to catch-up with colleagues and enjoy tasty culinary delights during CVIR’s 2012 reception.
The highlight of the reception was be the Awards Presentation during which some of CVIR’s most active reviewers and authors were honoured with the Award for Outstanding Service to the Journal
In recognition of their valuable support to the journal CardioVascular and Interventional Radiology, Springer Science, CIRSE, and Prof. Dierk Vorwerk invited the journals reviewers, authors and editorial board members to an exclusive reception held during CIRSE 2011.
The reception was held in the lakeside Restaurant am See in Munich, Germany.
In recognition of their valuable support to the journal, CVIR reviewers, authors and editorial board members were invited to attend an exclusive CIRSE 2010 lecture held by the renowned expert in publishing, Dr. William Curtis. The lecture, entitled "The Evolving World of Medical Journals", gave interesting insights into the possible challenges medical journal publishing may face in future.

Dr. William Curtis has been in the STM publishing industry for more than 25 years and is responsible for overseeing Springer’s business strategy as it relates to Clinical Medicine, Biomedicine and Life Science publishing, including books, journals, and e-database products. Dr. Curtis works with Springer editors in the UK, US, Europe, India and Japan. Dr. Curtis joined Springer in 1996, following stints at Oxford University Press and John Wiley & Sons. In addition to his publishing responsibilities, Dr. Curtis is also President of Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, the US-based corporate entity. Dr. Curtis has a Ph.D. in biology from Washington University in Saint Louis (1979).
